Andamooka opal, carbonized and covered with resin - 8,05ct
Size approx. 23x20x2,5mm
The Andamooka Matrix Opal was "carbonized" by me. A process in which the rough stone is placed in a glucose solution and this glucose is then carbonized in a heating process. This gives the stone a dark base to show off the opal inclusions. The rough stone is light gray to white and therefore the opal layers are barely visible without treatment.
The carbonization is permanent. Because of the porous surface of the stone, these types of opals are difficult to polish, so this stone was coated with resin.
